Purpose of Installation

This was established by Gapyeong County to remember the fierce battles of New Zealand soldiers here during the Korean War and their achievements and sacrifices.

Information

The Monument for the Participation of New Zealand in the Korean War is located on the Seonghwangdang hill at the entrance to Bukbaesan (Mt.). It faces the Australian monument and it was made of natural stones and stands 4.6m high on top of a 0.82m stylobate. It was erected by the UN Korean War Allied Forces Association and Gapyeong County on April 24, 1963 to remember the participation of the New Zealand Army and it was reconstructed on September 23, 1988 by Gapyeong County . A brass plate has inscriptions on it on one of the large stones. 31 New Zealand soldiers died and 78 were injured during the Korean War, which is the second highest casualty rate since World War 1.
